Davis Avenue

Davis Avenue was named after Jefferson Davis in 1861. Before the turn of the century,  it was a dusty bumpy road with ditches on either side. By 1904, the Mobile Register described it as a "town within a town." The Avenue, as it is affectionately called, grew to be a haven for Black businesses, homes, and entertainment. By the 1920's it was a bustling "city" and many Black Mobilians looked forward to coming to the Avenue as a special treat. While blacks were still not allowed in white establishments, some white Mobilians would visit Davis Avenue for a drink and good hospitality. Mobile's first library branch was built on Davis Avenue in 1931. Venues like the Gomez Auditorium saw entertainers such as Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald.

By the 1960's urban renewal led to the decline of Davis Avenue. As the years went on, more businesses closed and the bright light that was Davis Avenue got dimer and dimer. Local Mobilians want to bring the light back to Davis Avenue. And The A'Venue aims to show Mobile that Davis Avenue is just getting started.
